Abstract Key message Future international forest monitoring should build upon the existing pan-European programs. There is a renewed interest in of European forests. systems programs, making use their strengths and solving weaknesses. This approach will result into win–win solutions for both future systems. The UNECE ICP Forests has number characteristics that makes it very good strong basis developing an advanced system.
